Erik ten Hag was proven right again about Casemiro during Manchester United’s draw with Liverpool over the weekend. The Red Devils came from behind to lead at Old Trafford but were forced to settle for a point due to Mohamed Salah’s late penalty. Casemiro, chosen to start the match by Ten Hag, failed to justify his selection with another poor display in the middle of the park.

The 32-year-old has faced criticism at regular intervals this season and did little to silence the doubters against Liverpool despite having the backing of his United team-mates. Earlier this season, it was reported that Ten Hag’s decision to substitute Casemiro at half-time in the home win over Brentford did not go down well in the dressing room. United’s players sided with the midfielder after Ten Hag explained that he was substituted tactically for the team to ‘play more football’.

Casemiro’s recent poor performances have highlighted Ten Hag’s skepticism, with the Brazilian’s latest display against Liverpool not helping his cause. Although it could be argued that his underperformance is due to a lack of organization in United’s midfield, it is clear that his overall performance levels have simply not been good enough. In the match against Liverpool, Casemiro ended with a pass completion rate of just 67 per cent, the worst of any player to start the game.

He lost the ball on no less than 16 occasions and was ineffective when out of possession, allowing Liverpool’s forwards to bypass him easily. It remains to be seen if Casemiro will be dropped when United face Bournemouth this weekend after yet another off day against Liverpool.
