According to reports, incoming Manchester United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe is considering the possibility of rebuilding Old Trafford and creating a ‘Wembley of the north’. He believes that fans would support the idea of knocking down the current stadium and constructing a state-of-the-art venue on the existing land.
Ratcliffe is opposed to the idea of relocating the club to a different part of Manchester, as he feels that fans would prefer to stay at the club’s spiritual home. The proposed redevelopment and expansion of Old Trafford is seen as an eight-year project by the incoming INEOS group, who will hold a 25% share in United.
The cost for expanding the current stadium is estimated to be around £800m, while rebuilding on the current site would reportedly cost about £1.5 billion. Despite the higher cost, rebuilding is viewed as the most cost-effective way of creating a modern arena that could rival other top-class venues.
Ratcliffe reportedly envisions a ‘wow’ stadium and a ‘Wembley of the north’, and there are suggestions that government funding could potentially be sought for the project as part of the ‘Levelling Up’ initiatives. The plans are reminiscent of how Tottenham built their new stadium next to the site of their former White Hart Lane Stadium, emphasizing the importance of the club’s spiritual home in the decision-making process.
