Jose Mourinho’s opinion on returning to Chelsea as tide shifts on Pochettino
Jose Mourinho is currently without a job after leaving Roma. He wanted to return to England last year and viewed a return to Chelsea as his ‘ideal scenario’.
Mourinho is statistically the most successful manager in Chelsea’s history with three Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup. He has coached Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma since his second Chelsea exit.
The Portuguese was sacked by Serie A side Roma just last month despite winning the UEFA Conference League before reaching the Europa League final last season. Mourinho, now 61, has been mentioned as an experienced candidate to replace the under-fire Pochettino.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is under growing pressure. The Daily Mail reported in January of last year that Mourinho would love to come back if the opportunity arose.
The German, who won the Champions League with the Blues, was sacked and replaced by Potter, who also ended up being relieved of his duties. Pochettino is also in danger of his spell in west London ending prematurely due to underwhelming performances and results.
Jose Mourinho has won three Premier League titles with Chelsea. Mourinho’s stance on coming back to Stamford Bridge 12 months ago would indicate he’d relish a third stint in charge.
Thiago Silva’s wife Belle even appeared to call for Pochettino to lose his job at the weekend. It’s not yet clear if Todd Boehly and co. would be interested in making Mourinho their next manager now though.
The two-time Champions League-winning coach’s wife and children still live in London though. Mourinho has always preferred working in the Premier League and would seemingly be open to a dramatic third return to the Bridge if the vacancy opens up once more.
Chelsea’s record through 23 Premier League matches this season reads eerily similar to last year. And Pochettino is also in danger of his spell in west London ending prematurely due to underwhelming performances and results.
Speaking after a 4-2 loss at home to Wolves on Sunday, Pochettino said his team wants to take good results in the future and needs to move on and convince the players to never give up and recover from the defeat.
