Neil Warnock has recently been appointed as the manager of Aberdeen, marking his 19th managerial job. The 75-year-old has a reputation as one of football’s most iconic coaches, known for his on and off-field antics that have endeared him to fans globally.
During his time at Leeds United, Warnock controversially signed El-Hadji Diouf despite previously calling him a ‘sewer rat’ in a post-match rant. In another incident at Queens Park Rangers, he accused Diouf of verbally abusing Jamie Mackie, who was injured during an FA Cup game against Blackburn.
Despite his confrontations, Diouf went on to score five goals in 40 appearances for Leeds before leaving the club after two years. Warnock has also made unconventional decisions, such as picking a player based on his wife’s dream.
In a bold move, he played Danny Butterfield, a full-back, as a forward in an FA Cup replay, and Butterfield went on to score a perfect hat-trick in just six minutes. Warnock has also had public disputes with rival managers, including a well-known incident where he refused to shake hands with Nuno Espirito Santo after a heated game between his Cardiff City side and Wolves.
