Rasmus Hojlund’s recent performance for Manchester United has been nothing short of remarkable, with the 21-year-old striker scoring in five consecutive games and contributing to the team’s four consecutive victories across various competitions. Despite a slow start under Erik ten Hag, Hojlund has now found his stride, and his consultation with Red Devils legend Robin van Persie is believed to have played a significant role in his development.
Van Persie, a former star for United, returned to the club to observe training as part of his coaching qualifications, and reportedly shared his wisdom with Hojlund during a long conversation at Carrington. The impact of Van Persie’s guidance was evident as Hojlund continued his impressive form by scoring in a dramatic 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
Ten Hag approved Van Persie’s request to be involved in training, hoping that Hojlund can continue to benefit from his advice. This approach of seeking expertise from experienced Premier League strikers is not new for Ten Hag, as he had previously brought former player Benni McCarthy on board to work with the team’s forwards.
McCarthy’s influence was credited with helping Marcus Rashford achieve a 30-goal haul last season. Hojlund’s recent hot streak has propelled him to 11 goals in all competitions, with five in the Premier League.
It remains to be seen whether Van Persie will take on a permanent coaching role at Old Trafford once he completes his coaching qualifications. Currently, Van Persie is actively involved with Feyenoord, working as an assistant coach with the senior team and as a co-head coach in the youth ranks.
Earlier in the season, United legend Dwight Yorke had expressed doubts about Hojlund’s development under the guidance of McCarthy, questioning the fundamental aspects of his game. Yorke emphasized the importance of fine-tuning the striker’s movements and skills, suggesting that such small adjustments could greatly contribute to his improvement.
