Man City were charged with 115 alleged breaches of football’s financial rules. Everton has been hit with a two-point penalty by the Premier League for a breach of profit and sustainability regulations. The punishment, which Everton intends to appeal, comes after the club admitted to a financial loss exceeding the permitted amount over a given three-year period.
This decision has been made while charges hang over Manchester City, causing concern among football fans. The Toffees have been punished for the three-year cycle up to the 2022-23 season and feel they are subject to a “double punishment” after a previous deduction of 10 points was reduced to six upon appeal. Nottingham Forest also faced a deduction of four points for a breach of PSR, putting both clubs in a struggle to survive in the Premier League.
Fans are questioning why Manchester City has not been punished for 115 alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play and PSR. City was charged with breaking financial rules over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018, with the Premier League claiming a failure to provide accurate financial information. The Premier League’s decision-making process is being scrutinized as clubs like Everton and Nottingham Forest have received swift punishments, whereas City’s case, with its complexity and denial of wrongdoing, presents a much more challenging investigation.
The Premier League CEO mentioned a timescale for the investigation but did not disclose further details. Everton is unhappy with the length of time it is taking to investigate City’s breaches and believes they opened themselves up to a speedier punishment by fully cooperating with the Premier League.
