Premier League player’s uncommon nickname originates from the movie Cool Runnings

Brentford defender Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen has a unique story behind his nickname. The 33-year-old revealed that the moniker originated during his youth career at Danish club Boldklubben af 1893. It all started when, after an away game, his coach Johan Lange crammed lots of people into a car for the journey back. Zanka explained to Danish outlet B.T.

that his coach had been inspired by the movie ‘Cool Runnings’ and had called him ‘Sanka’ after a character in the film. The name caught on and became his nickname. Zanka made his Premier League debut with Huddersfield Town in 2017 before joining Brentford in 2021. He has been an integral part of the Bees’ defense, making 44 appearances for the club.

Despite Brentford’s struggles in the Premier League this season, Zanka has played an important role, especially during a season ridden with injuries. The Dane’s contribution has been recognized by the team’s management, who appreciate his level-headedness and understanding of his role within the group. Brentford’s next challenge is a trip to Villa Park, where they will aim to secure a victory against a Champions League-contending team.
