Klopp not worried by Liverpool dropping to second in Premier League
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been the antagonists of some of Manchester United’s darkest days since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Klopp’s title challengers slipped to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday, surrendering an array of chances while 1-0 up before rescuing a point through Mohamed Salah’s late penalty. The two sides have played out nine stalemates since Klopp became Liverpool manager in October 2015, which is more common than any other result.
United’s recent defeats to their bitter rivals have been significant, with Liverpool winning once in their last five meetings. Klopp only leads the head-to-head by two wins and the major trophy tallies by two during his almost-decade-long tenure. However, the stature of his silverware is undisputed, with Liverpool boasting a Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and two League Cups under the 56-year-old’s rule. Since Klopp’s arrival, United have secured two League Cups, an FA Cup, and a Europa League, whereas Klopp’s Liverpool have finished higher in the Premier League five times compared to United’s four occasions.
Yet, aside from one Premier League title, there is little to distinguish the two clubs’ success. Klopp has helped Liverpool reclaim their perch in the last decade, while United have predominantly been a top-four side since Ferguson’s departure, something they will push to change under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ leadership.
