Arsenal have a new Mikel Arteta ready and waiting as former player eyes ‘top club’

Soon, Mikel Arteta may not be the only ex-Arsenal star managing at the top level after Cesc Fabregas outlined his future ambitions. The 36-year-old hung up his playing boots after a short stint with Serie C side Como last summer, and duly took over the club’s under-19 and reserve sides.
In November, following the dismissal of Moreno Longo, Fabregas was promoted to interim boss of the first team, needing special dispensation to take on the role for a month given he hasn’t completed his UEFA Pro coaching license. Osian Roberts then installed as caretaker manager when that period elapsed.
“You never know how the future will go, but I want to be a main coach,” Fabregas told Standard Sport. “I am doing my own way at the moment.
100 per cent my ambition one day is to coach a top club in the Premier League, the Champions League.”
Fabregas spent nine seasons at Arsenal before later winning titles at both Barcelona and Chelsea. He also insisted he wouldn’t be rushing his journey, planning to continue to progress in Italy before thinking about a move elsewhere.
Arteta also cut his teeth in an assistant role before taking over at Arsenal in December 2019. After turning down coaching offers from both the Gunners and Spurs, he spent two-and-a-half-years as Pep Guardiola’s second-hand man at Manchester City.
And his reputation has since risen immeasurably with the club currently in the midst of a Premier League title battle, with Arteta now linked with a move to Barcelona this summer.
