Barcelona and Atletico Avoid UEFA Punishment for ‘Racist’ Chants in Football
Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have seemingly avoided punishment from UEFA for the racist chants directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior in recent Champions League matches. Despite calls for action from the Brazilian player and footage showing fans hurling abuse, UEFA’s latest disciplinary update did not reprimand either club for these incidents. Atletico Madrid was only fined £4,289 (€5,000) for a pitch invasion, raising questions about UEFA’s approach to tackling racism.
UEFA has not commented on the lack of punishment or whether an investigation is ongoing, despite the governing body having the authority to consider reports from various sources beyond match delegates. Real Madrid filed a formal complaint with Spanish authorities against the racist insults aimed at Vinicius Junior, reflecting the emotional toll of such abuse on the player. Vinicius Jr’s frustration with the lack of consequences for perpetrators was evident as he shared his experiences and his determination to keep fighting against racism.
Vinicius Jr’s teammate, Jude Bellingham, also emphasized the need for stronger action against racism in football, echoing FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s announcement of plans for a “strong resolution” to combat racism at the upcoming FIFA Congress in May.
