Tottenham striker Richarlison taunted Arsenal defender Gabriel on social media after colliding with his Brazil international team-mate in the north London derby. Mikel Arteta’s outfit emerged victorious in a 3-2 win at the home of their arch-rivals, continuing their Premier League title charge.
Richarlison, brought on as a second-half substitute in his return from injury, made an immediate impact on the game with a physical threat up front. This led to Spurs getting two goals back through Cristian Romero and a Son Heung-min penalty, setting up a nervy finish.
Despite this, Arsenal secured the three points. A moment after Richarlison entered the game, his collision with Gabriel left the Arsenal defender on the floor, earning him a yellow card.
This incident caught the attention of fans, with a Tottenham supporter posting a video of the clash on social media, captioned: “Brazil’s first-choice striker Vs Brazil’s last-choice CB.”
Richarlison reposted the video, taunting his compatriot, who has earned just six caps for his country despite being recognized as one of the league’s top defenders. The two players were seen confronting each other on the pitch at full-time, before Gabriel and his Arsenal team-mates celebrated in the corner with their traveling fans, retaining their spot at the top of the table.
The Daily Mail reported that preliminary talks have been opened to extend Gabriel’s contract, as he is set to be rewarded for his performances. His future at the beginning of the season was uncertain amid interest from Saudi Arabia, but he has proven to be indispensable under Arteta.
However, Richarlison’s social media activity may prompt an awkward reunion of the two stars when the Brazilian national team reconvenes this summer ahead of the Copa America. Gabriel is likely to be named in the upcoming international tournament alongside Richarlison, and the two could have plenty to say after their on-field incident and subsequent social media activity.
