Chelsea’s £27m investment goes to waste as Todd Boehly experiences unfortunate misfortune

Todd Boehly, the owner of Chelsea, has spent a significant amount of money on player wages during this season. According to a study, the club has paid over £27 million to cover the salaries of injured players. This financial burden is a result of the numerous fitness issues that Chelsea has faced in recent months, which has contributed to their poor start to the campaign. Despite the large investment in new signings by Todd Boehly, Chelsea has struggled to perform well in the short term. Mauricio Pochettino, the manager, has publicly acknowledged the impact of injuries on the team’s season.

The study reveals that a total of 16 Chelsea players have been ruled out due to injury this season, resulting in a combined 1,413 days missed as of January 22nd. The significant wages paid to these absent players highlight the club’s efforts to regain their place at the top of the Premier League, as well as their unfortunate luck with injuries. In fact, Chelsea has spent more on injured players’ wages than Manchester City and Tottenham combined. Other clubs, such as Manchester United and Newcastle, have also had to pay substantial amounts for their injured players.

Looking ahead, Chelsea hopes for better luck with injuries in the second half of the season, with the aim of having a full squad available for their European campaign. However, Pochettino will still be without eight players for their EFL Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough. Rehabilitation programs are ongoing for players like Christopher Nkunku, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Robert Sanchez, and Lesley Ugochukwu. Trevoh Chalobah, who is currently participating in group training sessions, may still leave the club this month. Several teams, including Fulham, Crystal Palace, and Italian clubs, are interested in acquiring the services of the Chelsea academy graduate who has yet to make a Premier League appearance under Pochettino.
