Everton and Nottingham Forest have been charged by the Premier League for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. The Premier League released a statement confirming that both clubs have admitted to breaching their Profitability and Sustainability Rules. The cases have been referred to the chair of the Judicial Panel, who will appoint separate commissions to determine the appropriate sanctions. The commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs, and their final decisions will be made public on the Premier League’s website.
The current FFP rules allow clubs to incur a maximum loss of £105 million over a three-season period. Everton had already received a 10-point deduction this season for breaching the rules between 2019 and 2022. They have now been charged with a new breach for the period between 2020 and 2023. Nottingham Forest faces the same charge. Despite their previous penalty, Everton currently sit in 17th position in the Premier League table, while Forest is in 15th.
If both clubs receive 10-point deductions for the new breaches, Everton would have only 7 points and drop to the bottom of the table, while Forest would have 10 points and fall to 19th. This would make it difficult for both clubs to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Following the charges, Everton released a statement expressing their disappointment with having to defend against a new complaint for the same financial periods they have already been sanctioned for. They believe there is a deficiency in the Premier League’s rules and will continue to defend their position during the ongoing appeal and any future commission. They assure their fans that the impact on supporters will be considered during the process.
Nottingham Forest acknowledged the charges and expressed their intention to fully cooperate with the Premier League. They are confident of a speedy and fair resolution to the matter.
