Forest Green manager Troy Deeney has received a four-game touchline ban and a £1,500 fine for his conduct during a match against Swindon Town in February. Deeney, who joined the club as a player-coach in the summer, quickly became the manager after the departure of David Horseman. This change came as the team was struggling, sitting in 23rd place in League Two. However, Deeney’s arrival has not sparked an improvement, as the team is now at the bottom of the table and has yet to win under his leadership.
In addition to the team’s poor performance, Deeney has faced criticism for his management style. He has publicly called out players who he believes are not performing up to par on the field, which has caused some controversy. To make matters worse, Deeney was sent off in the match against Swindon, receiving a red card just five minutes before the end of the game. As a result, he has been given a significant suspension by the Football Association.
The FA released a statement regarding Deeney’s ban, stating that his behavior and language leading to his dismissal were considered improper, abusive, insulting, and threatening. The charges were found to be true, and Deeney was sanctioned by an independent Regulatory Commission.
After Forest Green’s recent loss to Harrogate Town, Deeney publicly criticized his squad, stating that there were “too many babies” on the team and expressing his disappointment in their performance. He singled out defender Fankaty Dabo, describing his display as “awful.” Deeney has since apologized for his post-match conduct, explaining that his emotions sometimes get the better of him because he is passionate about the game and wants to see the team succeed.
