Jose Mourinho’s potential fee could add £38m to Chelsea’s expenses, having already cost them £31m

Romelu Lukaku and Jose Mourinho are no longer working together at Roma. Despite Lukaku’s impressive performance of scoring 14 goals in 25 games for the club this season, there is uncertainty regarding Roma’s decision to exercise the option to buy him permanently. This could potentially be costly for Chelsea, as they would have received £38 million if Mourinho had signed Lukaku permanently. The interim Roma manager, former captain Daniele De Rossi, will play a role in determining whether Lukaku stays next season. Mourinho’s previous sackings have already cost Chelsea £31 million, not including the wages and bonuses paid to him over five years. It remains to be seen if Chelsea will be further financially affected by his departure from Roma.

Lukaku’s future at Chelsea seems unlikely, as he was trained with the under-21s by Mauricio Pochettino earlier in the season. The Belgium international hinted at a difficult summer, stating that he will reveal the truth at the right time. Roma currently sits ninth in Serie A, while Pochettino’s Chelsea is ninth in the Premier League. While Roma already pays Lukaku’s wages and a loan fee, signing him permanently would cost them an additional £38 million. Given Lukaku’s age and Mourinho’s departure, it is uncertain if Roma will make the move to purchase him. Lukaku and Mourinho share a special bond, with Lukaku expressing his willingness to go through a brick wall for the coach, and Mourinho acknowledging Lukaku’s emotional nature.
