Rene Meulensteen, who was a first-team coach at Manchester United from 2007 to 2013, had advised the club to sign Son Heung-min in 2016. However, his advice went unheeded. Meulensteen, who spent years on Sir Alex Ferguson’s backroom staff, admitted to being frustrated when the club did not act on his suggestion. Son initially had a slow start at Tottenham after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, scoring only four Premier League goals in his first season. But Meulensteen believed that Son had the potential to make a significant impact at Manchester United, based on what he saw during that time. He expressed his annoyance about the move not materializing to United’s Scandinavian supporters club last year.
Since then, Son has become one of the top players in the Premier League, consistently scoring double figures in goals for the past eight seasons. He has already scored 12 goals in the ongoing campaign and has performed exceptionally well in the absence of Harry Kane. Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes that Son fits the caliber and profile of player that United should be targeting to improve their attacking threat. Yorke suggests that instead of going for experienced players like Karim Benzema, United should focus on signing players like Son who can make a difference for the team.
However, the chances of United successfully signing Son are slim, especially in the current transfer window. The club is being cautious to ensure compliance with Financial Fair Play regulations. Tottenham relies heavily on Son, who is their new captain, to help them secure a top-four finish this season. Although a move in the summer cannot be ruled out completely, Son still has one year remaining on his contract. In contrast, United signed Rasmus Hojlund in August, who is much younger than Son but has struggled to make an impact, scoring only two goals in over 1,000 minutes of Premier League action.
