Tottenham star Cristian Romero has admitted his surprise at being appointed as the team’s vice-captain following Ange Postecoglou’s arrival as manager. Romero, who joined Spurs permanently in 2022 after a loan spell, has excelled in the heart of the defense this season but acknowledges that he still has much to learn about leadership. He expressed his gratitude for the responsibility bestowed upon him and emphasized the importance he places on it. Romero also mentioned the positive impact of having previous captaincy examples in his career and described the moment as beautiful and emotional.
Romero formed a successful partnership with Micky van de Ven at the start of the season and contributed two goals to help Tottenham’s impressive early form. However, he received a red card in a match against Chelsea and had to watch from the sideline as the team suffered consecutive defeats. He returned to score his third goal of the season against West Ham but missed a couple of matches and an FA Cup game due to injury. Despite his disciplinary issues, Romero has been a key player for Tottenham, and Postecoglou has no intention of asking him to change his playing style, stating that his physicality is an integral part of who he is as a player. Both his presence on the field and in training are highly valued by the team.
