Daizen Maeda scored a goal in just 20 seconds at Ibrox. The Japanese international capitalized on James Tavernier’s mistake to give his team a sensational start while the Rangers fans were still in a raucous roar after kick-off.
Tavernier’s hesitancy allowed Maeda to close in behind him, resulting in the winger scoring from 20 yards, leaving Rangers’ goalkeeper with no chance. The goal was greeted with stunned stadium silence as away fans are still banned from Old Firm fixtures due to previous crowd trouble.
This goal, however, did not set a new record for an Old Firm game, as Matt O’Riley later made it 2-0 for Rangers. Celtic began the game a point ahead of their bitter rivals but under mounting pressure, with manager Brendan Rodgers facing scrutiny due to the Hoops’ loss of form.
The intensity of the match didn’t die down after the explosive opening. Midway through the half, Rangers missed an opportunity to level the score, and Maeda also had a chance to extend the lead, but was well saved by the goalkeeper.
Rangers’ goalkeeper, Jack Butland, made brilliant saves, including tipping away Matt O’Riley’s header. The hosts faced a VAR check against Goldson after a potential handball in his own area.
O’Riley eventually secured the second goal for Rangers, putting them 2-0 up after 34 minutes.
