Liverpool’s Potential £8.5m Discount on Ruben Amorim as Reds Pursue Managerial Move

The Merseyside club had initially targeted Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso to replace the German at the end of the season. However, Alonso committed himself to the Bundesliga side for another year, leaving Sporting’s Ruben Amorim as the clear favorite for the position. Amorim’s side is currently on a title charge after a 2-1 win over Benfica. Amorim currently has a release clause set at around £25.7 million for fellow Portuguese clubs, while the clause for other European sides is just over £17 million.

Reports suggest that Liverpool will be eligible for a further discount, with the fee possibly standing at just £8.5 million if he’s offered a role by a ‘top club’. Amorim has been in charge of the Primeria Liga outfit since 2020 and has won plaudits for the style of football he has imposed. After his side’s recent win, the 39-year-old was cryptic when asked about a potential second title under his tenure and his future plans. Should Amorim make the switch to England, he would face the sizable task of following in the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp.

However, it is unlikely that he would turn down the job offer from Liverpool given the prestige of the club and the financial package they can offer. Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel have also been linked to the Liverpool job. Nevertheless, Amorim remains the clear favorite, with negotiations expected to open imminently.
