Sir Alex Ferguson described the Manchester United academy product Ben Collett as “magnificent.” The Bury-born midfielder’s promising career was tragically cut short by a severe injury in a reserve game against Boro, which ultimately ended his United career before he made a first-team appearance. Despite brief stints abroad, the injury forced Collett to retire from football in 2007. In 2008, he initiated legal action against the player responsible for the injury and Middlesbrough, ultimately winning and receiving a £4.3 million compensation, the largest ever payout to a professional sportsperson in the UK at the time.
