Several key figures at Chelsea reportedly have faith that Mauricio Pochettino can turn things around at Stamford Bridge. The ex-Tottenham boss has come under immense pressure on several occasions so far this season, though his side’s victory over Manchester United may relieve some of that stress. In a crucial match for both sides, Chelsea stormed into a 2-0 lead after just 19 minutes after goals from Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer. United were thrown a lifeline in the 34th minute when Alejandro Garnacho capitalized on a poor mistake from Moises Caicedo before Bruno Fernandes equalized just five minutes later.
Chelsea managed to stage an unbelievable turnaround of their own in extra time. After Noni Madueke was tripped by Diogo Dalot, Palmer converted a 101st-minute penalty before grabbing his hat-trick under two minutes later when his shot deflected off of Scott McTominay and into the back of the net following a short corner. The late winner sparked wild scenes in the Chelsea dugout, with players celebrating with Pochettino and Palmer being swarmed by his teammates. According to Caught Offside, despite their poor season so far, ‘plenty’ of those in the Blues’ leadership believe that Pochettino should be afforded more time by the higher powers at the club.
Those Chelsea stars feel that the ex-Tottenham boss is the ‘right cultural fit’ for the club and have conceded that Pochettino is having to tackle numerous injury problems which are impacting performances. Pochettino, therefore, appears to retain the dressing room, and the grit and determination shown by the team against United would indicate that the team is willing to fight for their manager.
