Jason Wilcox’s first task as Manchester United technical director will reportedly involve conducting an audit on whether Erik ten Hag should remain the club’s manager. Ten Hag’s future is under increasing uncertainty after Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final capitulation against Coventry City.
He is set to hold extensive discussions with Ten Hag, his staff, and his players over the next month to determine whether he would be able to operate in a new-look ‘game model’. Sir Jim Ratcliffe – who became co-owner in February – and INEOS are overseeing a fresh approach to restore United’s former glories, appointing leading football figures to implement change.
Wilcox joins new chief executive Omar Berrada, who recommended him from their time together at City before the former became Southampton’s sporting director. Dan Ashworth will join as sporting director in the coming months, likely when Newcastle United find a replacement rather than at the end of his gardening leave in 2025.

The report adds that part of Wilcox’s audit will focus on whether United’s problems this season have mainly been down to the club’s torrid luck with injuries, as Ten Hag has repeatedly pointed towards. However, it’s claimed that if the Old Trafford giants miss out on European football altogether this term, the manager’s position could become untenable regardless of Wilcox’s findings.
