Todd Boehly, the owner of Chelsea, has been criticized by Edward Maatsen, the father of Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, for prioritizing money over the club’s best interests. Edward Maatsen has implied that his son may make his loan move to Borussia Dortmund permanent, despite a reported £35 million release clause in his deal with Chelsea.

Ian Maatsen’s impressive performance with Dortmund has raised doubts about his return to Chelsea. Edward Maatsen criticized the current ownership model at Chelsea, emphasizing the importance of the club’s interests over financial considerations. He highlighted Dortmund as the best club for his son’s development, citing examples of successful players who came from there.

Ian Maatsen, 22, joined Chelsea in 2018 and has had stints at Charlton, Coventry, and Burnley. He caught the eye with Burnley, helping them win the Championship title and earning a spot in the league team of the season. Despite initial prospects of a regular role at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino, he was eventually sent out on loan after making 12 Premier League appearances.

He has since played 18 times for Dortmund, scoring twice.
