Erik ten Hag’s substitutions during Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Coventry have come under scrutiny, as he withdrew teenage duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo in the second half, with United comfortably leading at the time. Ellis Simms scored a goal shortly after the substitutions, and although United still led 3-1, they ultimately conceded twice more.
ITV pundit Ian Wright expressed confusion about the substitutions, stating that it caused United’s performance to “descend into chaos” without the academy graduates on the pitch. Garnacho had previously liked social media posts criticizing Ten Hag’s decision to take him off in recent games.
Despite this, Ten Hag mentioned that Garnacho had apologized for it and that they were moving on. With United’s struggles in the Premier League, the FA Cup represents their only chance of winning a trophy this season.
Ten Hag remains under pressure to improve results, and there is speculation that minority shareholders INEOS may consider a change in leadership at the club.
