Zion Suzuki, Japan’s first-choice international goalkeeper, made the decision last summer to prioritize first-team minutes by joining Belgian side STVV, turning down a potential opportunity with Manchester United. Despite being available for just £5 million, Suzuki chose not to play backup to Andre Onana at United, and his decision has been fruitful, as he has been impressing with his performances for STVV.
Suzuki’s recent standout performance against OH Leuven showcased his skills, as he made 10 saves and successfully limited the scoreline to a 1-0 defeat despite facing 11 shots on target. His ability to play out from the back and his strong shot-stopping capabilities have made him a valuable asset for STVV.
At just 22 years old, Suzuki’s potential has yet to fully blossom, and it is expected that any future deal for the goalkeeper would cost more than the £5 million that was initially quoted last summer. A loan move for Suzuki to stay in Belgium permanently has been agreed upon, indicating that he will continue his development there.
In an interview, Suzuki explained his decision to reject Manchester United, emphasizing the importance of playing regularly and on the world stage to further his career goals. Despite considering the offer from United, he ultimately chose to prioritize his growth and development as a player.
