Manchester United have reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries. It was rumored that Inter Milan was willing to let Dumfries go to Old Trafford in exchange for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the offer was turned down by Manchester United. Wan-Bissaka’s position seemed uncertain when Erik ten Hag joined as manager last season, but he regained his starting spot after the 2022 World Cup. Despite a hamstring injury, Wan-Bissaka has still made 10 starts for the Red Devils this season. The club’s decision to extend Wan-Bissaka’s contract until 2025 shows how highly he is regarded by Ten Hag. The possibility of exchanging him for Dumfries was quickly dismissed. This marks a change in stance from Ten Hag, who was previously interested in Dumfries.
Denzel Dumfries was a key player for Inter Milan last season, making 51 appearances and playing a crucial role in their journey to the Champions League final. He is highly regarded by the fans and has been influential this season as Inter compete for the Serie A title. However, there are reportedly disagreements between Dumfries and the club over contract negotiations. Inter is looking to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and has asked Dumfries to take a significant wage cut to stay with the club long-term.
Manchester United, like Inter Milan, also has limitations due to regulations this month. Despite being linked to several players, Ten Hag will likely have to sell before he can make any new signings after the club’s expensive summer spending. Dumfries represented England at the under-21 level and was called up by Gareth Southgate for the Euro 2020 qualifiers, but had to withdraw due to a back injury. He is still waiting for his first England cap and has been offered the opportunity to play for Congo.
