Erik ten Hag left embarrassed as Andre Onana experiences fresh AFCON disappointment

Andre Onana, the Manchester United goalkeeper, has been dropped by Cameroon for their crucial Africa Cup of Nations match against Gambia. This latest setback adds to a disappointing season for Onana at Old Trafford. Last summer, manager Erik ten Hag had placed his trust in the 27-year-old as the replacement for David de Gea, acquiring him in a £47 million transfer from Inter Milan. However, Onana has struggled since joining United, making several high-profile mistakes that have contributed to underwhelming results.

Adding to his troubles, Onana had a falling out with manager Rigobert Song during the 2022 World Cup, leading him to retire from international duty with Cameroon. However, he later reversed his decision and rejoined the national team. Unfortunately, his performance in the African Cup of Nations has mirrored his struggles at United. Following a draw against Tottenham Hotspur, Onana was expected to start for Cameroon against Guinea, but a flight delay caused him to arrive late. As a result, he watched his cousin Fabrice Ondoa start in a 1-1 draw instead.
