Edu secures pre-agreement to fulfill Arsenal’s ideal end to January transfer window; £8m flop set to be sold

Arsenal’s transfer window has been largely quiet, with the only significant move being the recall of Marquinhos from his loan spell at Nantes. Despite this, sporting director Edu still has important tasks to address. Mikel Arteta had previously warned fans about a quiet window, even though Arsenal is in contention for the Premier League title. The focus now is on improving the current squad and planning for the summer. Progressing towards these goals, two potential outcomes have been identified.

Firstly, Arsenal is reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Real Sociedad for Martin Zubimendi. The 24-year-old midfielder, a long-term target for the club, has a release clause of £51.4million. Triggering this clause would secure the player’s signature and ward off competition from Barcelona. The question remains whether further progress can be made before the end of the month.

Secondly, Edu needs to address the situation with Nuno Tavares, the left-back signed for £8m. Tavares has not played a single match for Arsenal this season, spending last season on loan at Marseille and this season at Nottingham Forest. Both the player and the club are reportedly interested in cutting short Tavares’ loan at Forest. Marseille is keen to sign him permanently, but the deal depends on Forest’s willingness to terminate the loan, as there is no recall clause in the agreement between Arsenal and Forest.

In conclusion, although Arsenal’s January transfer window has been quiet in terms of major signings, there are still important tasks for Edu to undertake. The potential signing of Martin Zubimendi and the resolution of Nuno Tavares’ loan situation would contribute to a successful window for the club.
