Roy Hodgson is facing increasing pressure as Crystal Palace’s manager. Following a devastating 5-0 defeat against Arsenal, Hodgson recently met with the club’s chairman, Steve Parish, to discuss his future. It was made clear to Hodgson that he will need to turn the team’s fortunes around in the coming weeks in order to avoid being sacked.
After their game against Sheffield United, Palace will face Brighton away on February 3 and Chelsea at home on February 12. The outcome of these three matches will be crucial in determining whether Hodgson will remain in charge. The defeat against Arsenal has raised doubts about Hodgson’s ability to lead the team, as Palace is now dangerously close to the relegation zone in 15th place.
Hodgson was asked about his support from the Palace board after the Arsenal drubbing. He stated that he has always felt supported by them, but acknowledged that in the current situation, the board will have to make a decision. When a team is not performing well, the manager is often held responsible.
According to the Daily Mail, Palace’s chairman and sporting director are already looking at potential replacements for Hodgson. Former Nottingham Forest boss, Steve Cooper, and former Wolves head coach, Julen Lopetegui, are rumored to be among the candidates. Although Parish initially wanted Hodgson to see out the season, the recent string of poor results may force him to make a decision sooner. Palace has only won two of their last 10 Premier League games and is only five points clear of relegation.
