Mohamed Salah has bid farewell to ex-Egypt boss Rui Vitoria after the coach was sacked following Egypt’s disappointing performance at the African Cup of Nations. Egypt managed to reach the knockout stage without winning any group games, and were eliminated by DR Congo on penalties.
Vitoria, who took charge in July 2022, was relieved of his duties despite an impressive record before the tournament. Salah, who earned 13 of his 86 Egypt caps under Vitoria, paid tribute to him on Instagram, wishing him the best in the future.
Salah’s last game under Vitoria ended in a 2-2 draw against Ghana, during which he sustained a hamstring injury. There was also tension between Salah’s club, Liverpool, and Vitoria, when Jurgen Klopp publicly discussed Salah’s fitness.
Vitoria was displeased with the public disclosure, leading to a brief exchange between the two managers. Ultimately, Egypt’s early exit from the competition rendered Salah’s potential return moot, leaving uncertainty over his availability for Liverpool’s upcoming matches.
Liverpool’s next match is against Burnley in the Premier League, and it remains unclear when Salah will be available as they pursue success in multiple competitions this season.
