Steven Gerrard ‘eager for Liverpool job’ despite new Saudi deal: Football

Gerrard’s stock has fallen after he was sacked by Aston Villa and he’s now in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq. But the Saudi Pro League side, who return to domestic action after a winter break on Thursday, are winless in their last nine matches stretching back to October. Despite the issues, Al-Ettifaq’s hierarchy maintain their faith in Gerrard and handed him a new two-year contract last month that ties him down until 2027.

Gerrard’s struggles at Villa and his current situation in Saudi Arabia means he has hardly been mentioned as a genuine contender to replace Klopp at Anfield. The German stunned Liverpool’s fan base by last month announcing he will depart at season’s end due to a lack of energy after nine years in the role.
Xabi Alonso, Gerrard’s former team-mate, is the No. 1 pick for the position. That’s despite the Spaniard only starting his first senior role at Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, with Gerrard having been in management since June 2018 when he had a successful spell with Rangers.

But Gary McAllister, Gerrard’s assistant manager at both Rangers and Villa, insists the legendary former midfielder who played 710 times for Liverpool who would come rushing straight back to Merseyside if the call ever came. Speaking exclusively to Express Sport via Lord Ping, McAllister said: “I think everybody knows how Steven Gerrard feels about Liverpool. They’re his club, and he’d be there in a second if they needed him.

The Scot, himself a former team-mate of Gerrard’s at Anfield, was reluctant to pick who he thinks could be the best man to replace Klopp. He added: “Finding Jurgen Klopp’s successor will be a process.
Ange Postecoglou, Ruben Amorim, and Thomas Frank are all household names who create teams with a style and a certain way of playing. “I think it’s a bit disrespectful to mention managers who are currently working. There are so many names out there, and finding the right one will be a huge undertaking.
Liverpool don’t need a huge rebuild. They need someone who can come in, take the reins, and put their stamp on it. “I think it’s too early to name names.

Liverpool still have four trophies to play for this season as they look to send Klopp off into the sunset with some silverware. They play the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea in two weeks’ time on February 25.
They also have a favorable home draw against Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup while they’re waiting to learn their Europa League last 16 opponents. And despite defeat to Arsenal in their last Premier League match, they go into match-day 24 two points clear at the top of the table.
