Liverpool could reduce £19m from wage bill to ease Xabi Alonso’s job.

Xabi Alonso is hoping to guide Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title this season, as reported by GETTY. Liverpool is exploring ways to reduce their annual wage bill by almost £19 million to facilitate an easier transition for Jurgen Klopp’s successor. Klopp, a legendary German manager, is set to leave the club at the end of the season, and Xabi Alonso, a former midfielder, is the front runner to take over.

Despite Alonso’s strong ties to the club, filling the void left by Klopp presents a significant challenge. However, Liverpool could potentially free up approximately £360,000 per week from their wage bill to provide Alonso with additional financial resources for the summer transfer window. This would allow him to reshape the squad and reinforce it according to his preferences.

Comparatively, the financial constraints at Bayer Leverkusen are apparent, with the highest-earning player reportedly receiving around £100,000 a week. In contrast, Liverpool has 13 players earning more than that amount. The potential departures of two high-earning players at Liverpool this summer could further contribute to freeing up funds for Alonso to utilize in strengthening the squad.

Thiago Alcantara, a former colleague of Alonso at Bayern Munich, is poised to exit Liverpool at the end of the season along with Klopp, having suffered an injury and with his contract expiring in July. Additionally, players like Joel Matip and Adrian may also leave on free transfers, providing further relief to the wage bill. Offloading Thiago, Matip, and Adrian could potentially free up £360,000 a week, amounting to approximately £18.72 million annually – a considerable sum that could facilitate financial flexibility for the club.

This may provide Alonso with the means to potentially bring in new players from Leverkusen or elsewhere, such as Florian Wirtz or Piero Hincapie.
