Edu and Mikel Arteta made the decision to sell Rob Holding last summer to Crystal Palace for a seemingly modest £4 million fee after seven seasons at Arsenal. Despite his contributions to the club, including a critical goal against Manchester City last April, some fans questioned the sale due to a lack of squad depth and Holding’s experience.
However, Holding’s career has stalled since his move to Crystal Palace, and he has yet to make a Premier League appearance for the team after undergoing foot and ankle surgery in January. Former manager Roy Hodgson was uncertain about his return date.
Holding has only made one cup appearance for Crystal Palace, receiving a yellow card in a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United. Despite his previous successes at Arsenal and a regular place in the 2020/21 season, his future at Palace seems uncertain under new manager Oliver Glasner.
With his contract running until 2026, Holding’s hopes of a full international call-up also appear to be diminishing. He had made five appearances for the England U21 side and was initially expected to make the transition to the senior team.
