Monterrey assistant coach Nico Sanchez has issued an apology for his derogatory comments about Lionel Messi in leaked audio. He referred to Messi as a “dwarf” and claimed that the Argentine had “the face of the devil” during a confrontation in a match between Monterrey and Inter Miami.
The incident occurred during the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup quarter-final, which Monterrey won 2-1. The match saw tensions rise as Inter Miami received multiple cards and had a confrontation with match officials involving Messi, Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, and Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino.
Sanchez’s apology came on social media, where he expressed regret for disrespecting Martino and acknowledged his Argentine heritage while reaffirming his commitment to defending his club. Meanwhile, Messi made his return from injury in a 2-2 draw with the Colorado Rapids in the MLS.
It is anticipated that Messi will play in the second leg against Monterrey, with Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino confirming that Messi will start. Martino emphasized the importance of Messi’s presence on the team and the comfort he brings, despite acknowledging the risk of playing him in the first leg against Monterrey.
