Naby Keita, the former Liverpool midfielder, has been suspended by Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. He was accused of refusing to feature in the club’s game against Bayer Leverkusen and was subsequently hit with a ‘substantial’ fine.

Without Keita, Werder suffered a 5-0 defeat, and it was confirmed that Bayer had become Bundesliga champions. As a result of his actions, Werder Bremen has excluded Keita from their first-team squad for the final five games of the season and has also imposed a substantial fine on him.

This decision was announced through a statement from the club. Keita responded to the accusations against him, defending his professionalism and character while accusing the club of attempting to tarnish his reputation.

He claimed that he had always shown exemplary discipline and had tried to help the club and its supporters, especially during difficult times. Keita joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer from Liverpool at the end of last season.

However, he has struggled to make an impact due to a muscle injury and has played only 106 minutes of Bundesliga football this season. His exclusion from the game against Bayer was the final straw, leading to his suspension and fueling speculation of a summer departure from the club.
