Chelsea may have to offload players this summer after spending big under Todd Boehly. Chelsea star Ian Maatsen is considering his options ahead of the summer transfer window, after going on loan to Borussia Dortmund in January due to lack of game time under Mauricio Pochettino.
It is suggested that if Todd Boehly’s recruitment team can find a buyer, Maatsen could be one of the first players to be moved on. With only one Premier League start in the first half of the season, Maatsen is now a regular in the Bundesliga with BVB and is preparing for a Champions League semi-final.
He has hinted at the possibility of leaving Stamford Bridge permanently this summer, stating that “all his options are open”. Maatsen also expressed his gratitude towards Chelsea and highlighted the belief shown in him by the board, coach, and technical directors at Borussia Dortmund.
There is a £35 million release clause included in the contract, making a potential summer sale a possibility. Other players currently out on loan could also be part of a fire sale as Chelsea seeks to adhere to the Premier League’s financial rules.
Kepa Arrizabalaga, Romelu Lukaku, and Hakim Ziyech are among those deemed surplus to requirements, with their exits likely. Additionally, struggling players in Pochettino’s squad, such as Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, and Raheem Sterling, may also face potential exits as Chelsea’s expensively assembled squad continues to struggle to produce results.
