Man Utd Misses Perfect Opportunity for Swap Deal as Star ‘Seals Move Away’

Manchester United have reportedly identified Benfica midfielder Joao Neves as a priority transfer target this summer, in their pursuit of midfield upgrades.

However, United’s hopes of a deal with Benfica could be affected by the potential first sale of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era. Amid Financial Fair Play limitations and a need to sell to buy this summer, a £102m transfer for Neves seems unlikely. A swap deal involving Alvaro Fernandez may have been considered to lower Benfica’s valuation.

The 21-year-old left-back impressed during his loan at Granada and his subsequent move to Benfica in January. The M16 heavyweights face the possibility of missing out on the teenage sensation unless they can quickly raise funds through further player sales. Reports suggest that Chelsea’s summer sales approach will be different from recent years.

Some players may be exempt from a summer sale, including Andre Onana, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund. Some star players– including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Mason Greenwood–could attract lucrative fees to help reshape the injury-stricken, underperforming squad.
