Sandro Tonali, a midfielder for Newcastle, has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football due to 50 breaches of the FA’s betting rules. An independent Regulatory Commission issued the sanction, stating that Tonali placed bets on football matches between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023.

The commission’s written rules for the sanction detail specific matches on which Tonali placed bets, including Newcastle’s games against Brighton, Burnley, Brentford, Manchester City, and West Ham. Despite admitting to placing bets on Premier League matches, Tonali did not engage in betting on the Champions League or international football. Newcastle confirmed that the 23-year-old is undergoing a therapeutic plan and educational program with the club’s full support.

Additionally, he has been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA regarding his future conduct. The suspension period has been fully suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season, allowing Tonali to return to competitive football after the conclusion of a 10-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation. This is provided that he does not commit any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension period.

The FA acknowledged the extraordinary level of assistance provided by Tonali in self-referring and fully cooperating with the investigation. He continues to follow a therapeutic plan and educational program with the club’s full support and will train with his teammates.
