Premier League seeks to deduct 17 points from Everton as bizarre details come to light.

Sean Dyche’s Everton has faced two separate points deductions this season. The first deduction was imposed for breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the three-year period ending in 2021/22, resulting in a six-point penalty (reduced from 10 on appeal). The second deduction, announced on Monday, was for breaching the PSR threshold for the three-year period up to 2022/23, resulting in a two-point penalty. Premier League bosses had initially requested a hefty 17-point deduction for Everton, with 12 points for the first breach and 5 points for the second.

However, the independent commission chose a less severe approach, taking into account mitigating factors provided by Everton. These factors included a loss of revenue due to the suspension of a Russian sponsorship deal and the club’s early admission of guilt. The total of 17 points deducted would have placed Everton near the bottom of the table, but the actual deduction leaves them two points clear of the relegation zone. Nottingham Forest is the only other club to have been penalized for breaching PSR this season, receiving a four-point deduction.

Everton has expressed concern about the inconsistency of punishments handed out this season, stating their intention to appeal the commission’s decision. They have also thanked their Fan Advisory Board and other fan groups for their contributions and the continued support of Evertonians.
