Chelsea Could Benefit in Pursuit of ‘Usain Bolt of Football’ Star Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand previously heaped praise on one of Chelsea’s potential transfer targets. In the midst of a left-back crisis at Stamford Bridge, with long-term injuries to Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella, Chelsea has expressed interest in Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. Davies, a Canadian international, has been with Bayern since 2018 and has contributed to several Bundesliga titles and a Champions League win. However, with his contract expiring in 2025, Bayern faces the risk of losing Davies for free if his future is not resolved before next season. He is valued at £43 million by his club, and Real Madrid is also rumored to be interested. Bayern is reportedly hesitant to pay an excessive amount for Davies in his new contract negotiations, which could open the door for Chelsea.

Despite financial restrictions due to Financial Fair Play (FFP), Chelsea should not face problems with the proposed fee, as they are known for offering lucrative contracts under owner Todd Boehly. Former footballer Rio Ferdinand previously praised Davies, stating that he is the “Usain Bolt of football” and one of the best left-backs in the game due to his phenomenal trajectory and pace in both attack and defense.

Davies has made 24 club appearances this season and remains an integral part of Bayern’s squad as they compete in the Bundesliga and Champions League. The Blues are not expected to make a move for Davies in the January transfer window, despite their defensive shortage. Manager Mauricio Pochettino may need to sell players in order to adhere to FFP regulations if he wishes to make a new signing.
