Gareth Southgate may lead England at 2026 World Cup as FA aims to retain manager

Gareth Southgate hinted at the possibility of continuing as England boss beyond Euro 2024. Football Association officials are reportedly eager for him to lead the team at the 2026 World Cup.

Southgate indicated the potential extension of his tenure, expressing that he would not make a decision before the Euro 2024 tournament. While it was previously expected that he would step down after the upcoming tournament, key figures within the FA are now keen for him to stay for the 2026 World Cup.

Southgate’s contract has been extended for an additional six months, allowing for a “handing over period.” The lack of clear replacements for the Three Lions manager is cited as another reason for the desire for him to lead the team into the North America-based World Cup.

The FA reportedly holds concerns about potential candidates, including U21s head coach Lee Carsley, not being popular among the public. Southgate underlined the possibility of his continuation, stating that decisions about coaching staff often change after major tournaments.

He emphasized that his focus is on the upcoming summer, and any decisions about his future would follow the tournament. Southgate has led significant reforms in England’s success at major tournaments and is considered to be a crucial figure at St. George’s Park.

The FA values his leadership and advocates for his continued role.
