Premier League player believes he resembles Michael Owen’s son and calls him ‘dad’

Sergio Reguilon made a lighthearted remark on social media, humorously referring to former England striker Michael Owen as his ‘dad’ after noticing a resemblance between himself and Owen’s teenage son, James. This came about when Owen posted a picture of himself alongside James to celebrate the latter’s 18th birthday, with the caption expressing Owen’s pride in his son’s growth into adulthood. Reguilon’s comment prompted others to also observe the likeness between himself and James in the photo. It was noted that James had aspirations of pursuing a football career like his father, but his dreams were halted by a diagnosis of Stargardt disease at the age of eight.

This genetic condition, which has no cure, has caused James to become ‘clinically’ blind due to the build-up of fatty material on the macula of his retina. James discussed the impact of his condition, expressing how it affected his ability to continue playing football. Despite the difficulties, he maintains a positive mindset, a quality acknowledged by his father, Michael Owen. Owen has openly voiced his support for James, expressing his willingness to do anything to help his son regain his sight.

The family’s coping with James’s condition has been a challenging journey, raising questions about his future ability to drive and work. However, the strength and positivity demonstrated by James have effectively reassured his family.
