Sancho returned to his former club on loan in January following his fallout with Ten Hag at Old Trafford. After a slow start, Sancho’s performance reminded fans and pundits why United had paid over £70 million for him in 2021.
Dortmund’s official club account acknowledged his superb display against the Parisians, posting on X: “You all owe him an apology, we were ALWAYS familiar with his game”. Sancho left United after his fallout with Erik ten Hag and was subsequently forced to train away from the first team.
He didn’t play another minute of action for the Red Devils before heading out on loan four months later. His excellent performance against the French champions prompted praise from ex-United icon Rio Ferdinand, who lauded his return to form and his skill on the field.
Sancho’s international career also faced a setback when he failed to make the 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar. This has sparked a debate about his future, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces a crucial decision this summer on whether to bring him back into the fold at United.
The decision may be influenced by the potential departure of Ten Hag. Sancho is contracted at United until 2026, and a permanent return to Dortmund would likely involve a drop in wages and a loss on the fee United paid for him three years ago.
